Better Know a B: Be Inspired Films

Be Inspired Films is a multi-award winning production company based in the UK. We bring great ideas to life and tell stories of impact for forward thinking organisations across business and society.

KS | Tell us a bit about the history of Be Inspired films?

After completing my MBA in 2008, I knew I wanted to work in an area that offered value to society. I had made a film in East Africa in 1996 and had seen the power of video to raise awareness and inspire support. So I started Be Inspired Films to tell stories for organisations that were serious about making a difference in the world, as these are the stories that inspire me.

KS | Why did you become a B Corp?

I wanted to align with for profit businesses committed to making a difference. We are committed to the movement and wanted to join a group of like minded people trying to change business in it's broadest sense. Being a B Corp demonstrates that we are a business with strong social values and helps us to communicate what we are doing.

KS | What excites you about being part of the global B Corporation movement?

Being in a global tribe and part of what the future holds. It is exciting to connect with other B corps who have shared values and are committed to making a difference through business.

KS | Can you tell us a little bit about the impact that Be inspired films is hoping to have/is having in the world?

We know how powerful storytelling is so enabling our clients to tell their story through the films and animations they commission from us, is how we make our impact. Our story is made up by all their stories.

We also understand that creating regular video content is now more important than ever but can be expensive if all outsourced. Through our sister company, Video KnowHow Academy, we train change makers and entrepreneurs to create some of their own video content on a budget.

In the future I see Be Inspired Films raising awareness and challenging perceptions on social issues through hard-hitting feature length documentaries.

KS | What benefits have you seen since certification?

We have been approached by a fellow B Corp to work together because of our shared values. It has also been very well received when we mention being a B Corp in our presentations and pitches. We feel proud to be part of the movement; it adds an additional kudos to what we do.

We are very proud of the animation we created for fellow B Corp Volans to help launch their Breakthrough Capitalism report (see below or click here):

KS | How did your other staff react to the certification?

It was well received by our staff, freelancers and online community. It gave everyone a sense of pride and a joint sense of purpose, especially being a founding member of the community. Staff naturally got on board with it.

KS | What has changed in your organisation as a result of taking the B Impact Assessment?

Going through the process made us reassess what we were doing and formalise a lot of things we were committed to in principle, but yet to commit to with a formal policy. We created an employee handbook, which has been a really useful tool regardless of being a B Corp. Everyone got involved with certification and we embedded principles in a fresh way. It also helped to attract new staff who shared our values and assisted with the induction process.

KS | What does the year ahead hold in store for Be Inspired Films?

Last year we won the Recommended Agency Award for ‘Best Content Strategy’ as well as being shortlisted for the Royal Television Society Award in the ‘Best Promotional Programme’ category for this film with Nesta and Derbyshire Council.

This year we are very exciting about building on our previous successes, stretching ourselves further creatively and in the level of service we offer our clients and have lots of interesting new work coming in.

In particular a lot more live streaming - by the end of February will have done 5 live streaming events, the biggest being TEDxEastEnd at the Hackney Empire last Saturday.

We have also just launched our new 90 day Video Hero Programme empowering entrepreneurs and change makers to tell their own stories using video, alongside the work we get commissioned to create for them.

In particular I want to work with our new and existing clients in a more engaged way, as a trusted strategic partner helping them plan ahead to use the power of video to achieve their big goals. I also have a few stories I am researching to create a feature length documentary.

KS | Who is your B Corp crush?

Futerra, I think we'll kiss on the first date.

KS | It's 2020, 5 years since you certified as a B Corp, what does the movement look like?

Hopefully there are at least 30,000 certified B Corps worldwide. And at least 300,000 who are measuring what matters, using the B Impact Assessment. It will be so much more exciting to see a broader range of businesses taking the assessment with a view to improving their social impact.

KS | What are you reading at the moment?

I'm reading Key Person of Influence by Daniel Priestley.
