Better Know a B: Elephant Creative
Elephant Creative is a network of marketing, PR and business experts, specialising in the professional services and education sectors. Helen Hammond, founder of Elephant Creative, took time out of her busy schedule to chat to us.
SD | Tell us a bit about the history of your company?
Elephant Creative was set up in 2008, in the UK, to do things a bit differently. We deliver marketing, PR, social media and business development expertise in a plain English, common-sense format. We're an international, virtual network of experts, with a particular specialism in the professional services and education sectors. With associates in both the UK and US (as well as straddling both) we don’t have offices or expensive overheads, preferring to operate like a ‘dream’ communications team. Our aim is to provide high level expertise, without all the fancy high-rise PR office expense, offering our clients better value-for-money. The virtual nature of our business has meant that we have built a team of men and women, who are able to work flexibly from their own offices or at home, and we have received national awards for our flexible working conditions.
SD | Why did you become a B Corp?
One of our law firm clients had become a B Corp and talked to us about the ethos and benefits. For Elephant Creative, becoming a B Corp is really important because the perception of marketing people and agencies is that they are full of hot-air and are only interested in sales and return-on-investment etc.
At Elephant Creative we want to show you can have a successful marketing business, that is also a responsible employer and responsible business in all senses, whether that be the way we work with clients, or the way we treat the environment.
SD | What excites you about being part of the global B Corporation movement?
What excites us about the B Corp movement is that being a business is more than just profit, it's about creating a future that is prosperous for everyone. It's about challenging ourselves every day to ensure we meet high standards in our work practices and ethics.
SD | Can you tell us about the impact that your company is having in the world?
One thing we've recently done is become a member of 1% for the Planet, in which you pledge to give 1% of all your profits to a charity that has an impact on the environment. We've been teamed up with a fantastic elephant conservation charity. Similarly, over the last couple of years we have worked with a charity in Cameroon, and set up a scheme called Elephants Abroad in which we support women in Cameroon starting up their own small businesses.
SD | What benefits have you seen since certification?
We've only just been certified, but it impacts on team moral and a sense of working towards something greater than just running a marketing company.
SD | How did your other staff react to the certification?
Our associates are extremely pleased to be part of a B Corp. We are based around the country and therefore don't get to meet very often, however something like this brings the team together. We have our annual Elephant Day conference in January and the B Corp status news is top of the agenda!
SD | What does the year ahead hold in store for your company?
Next year we are looking to do a big launch of our legal marketing services within the US, delivering our quality and no-nonsense marketing expertise to US firms. We're also launching some specific marketing services for Barrister Chambers in the UK.
On a separate note, we'll be a launching a new simple marketing book to produce and send to the women in Cameroon on the Elephants Abroad project, to give them practical advice to market their own businesses.
SD | Who is your B Corp crush?
So many fantastic firms, we simply couldn't choose. We'd love to work with B Corps as much as possible, as they share our vision and views.
SD | It’s 2020, 5 years since you certified as a B Corp, what does the movement look like?
The B Corp movement will certainly become a global force for good, and those with B Corp status with be leading the way in best practice for running businesses around the world. It's exciting to be a part of that.
