Better Know a B: Pelorus

Pelorus are a business consultancy who apply their knowledge and experience of organisational development and learning design to create powerful people development solutions using the latest evidence led approaches in neuroscience, physiology and business psychology. Founder Jack Broadley shared the Pelorus story with us. 

SD | Tell us a bit about the history of your company? is a Founding UK B Corp. Started in 2008 our goal was to create a capable, friendly and trusted advisory firm. One that put people, purpose and planet at its centre. 

Today, we work with businesses across all sectors and locations on Organisational Development (OD) and Experiential Learning Projects. We help clients to understand how these key areas connect to create happy, healthy and successful workplaces.   

Our aim was to be more than just a place of work. Helping our clients to release the potential of people was what we did. So, … it was important that we also did that for our own folk. Creating a happy, healthy space where people could do meaningful work. We have tried to practice what we preach.  

SD | Why did you become a B Corp?

We started to hear business leaders expressing concern that they were losing their way. Trust levels -post Crash were very low. Research also told us that something like 1 in 4 of the UK workforce were experiencing mental health issues. Alarm bells were ringing! Business needed to change the way it did things. Many people, not just Gen Y Folks were asking …. Why? rather than …. What? 

We started looking for external benchmarks to help our Clients create meaning around their Business. We wanted some useful metrics to measure People, Purpose and Planet outcomes. So we found B Corp! 

SD | What excites you about being part of the global B Corporation movement?

We were very happy to be in the first Cohort of UK Companies to gain B Corp accreditation in 2015. It felt amazing to be involved in an emerging global movement. To be there at the start of things. 

Each time we have come together with other B Corps folks, it’s like being with friends and family. Everyone just “gets it”. To use a metaphor, it is like being on a long, tough journey accompanied by an inspiring group of friendly, fellow travellers. Rather daunting also very exciting!

SD | Can you tell us about the impact that your company is having in the world?

We have worked with some great clients and people from many organisations like: NBC Universal, Lloyds of London, Bain Consulting, Goodwood, Fat Face & Roche. World impact? Well difficult to prove that one! We do know we have made a real impact with our clients.  Our job is to make people in Business think, feel and do things differently. 

SD | What benefits have you seen since certification?

For us the benefits were knowing that our ethos, approach and practices are grounded in a proven, value based standard. This gives us confidence when working with Clients. We know we are on solid ground. 

SD | How did your other staff react to the certification?

Everyone at Pelorus understands and engages with the B Corp concept. As an Advisory Service, it is important that we practice what we preach. Before people work with Pelorus we like to know they too can get behind it. 

SD | What has changed in your organisation because of taking the B Impact Assessment?

It has certainly changed the way we do our Back Office. There are more processes and checks and balances in place, which is good for our Business. We are also more aware of our relationships and responsibility with suppliers, associates and the business community.
