Better Know a B: Power of Youth
Power of Youth is working towards a future where every entrepreneur is driven by a purpose greater than profit, every business is a force for good, and everyone has the opportunity to contribute towards the uplifting of society so together we can build a better world through business. We caught up with Zoi Kantounatou, Director and Business Manager at Power of Youth.
SD | Tell us a bit about the history of your company?
The global economy exists on a planet and it is a subset of the environment. The economy cannot exist without an environment, without the planet, without resources and without energy. To think of the planet and its resources as a subset of the economy sounds like madness, however we have somehow built the foundations of our global economy on a set of rules that undermine this reality and where we have been spending the inheritance of future generations.
This is the context in which Adam, the founder of POY, entered the working world, in an age where his generation were waking up to this fact and were increasingly less willing to live with it as the status quo. As the old paradigm is crumbling, a new one is being built by countless organisations and individuals across the planet.
Power of Youth was founded in 2011, based on the unwavering belief that it is possible build a better world through business. Over the last five years we have worked with some incredible individuals and governments to build a global community of entrepreneurs who are willing to do whatever it takes to shift the current reality of enterprise into one that is uplifting for all.
Why 'Power of Youth’? “This world demands the qualities of youth; not a time of life but a state of mind, a temper of the will, a quality of the imagination, a predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the life of ease.” (Robert F. Kennedy)
SD | Why did you become a B Corp?
Through the work we are doing we became aware of the B Corp movement as our work and mission is quite similar. We become one of the founding B Corps in the UK because we really wanted to support the movement and start a meaningful collaboration. For us it was also an exciting opportunity to test our business model and review our processes through this rigorous assessment. We wanted to show that we are doing what we are preaching and that was extremely important for us.
SD | What excites you about being part of the global B Corporation movement?
The fact that we are part of a family of businesses that are doing good, which has been central to our mission for such a long time. Especially because B Corp is working in places that we haven't worked yet so it's exciting to know that they are making a difference. It is extremely inspiring.
SD | Can you tell us about the impact that your company is having in the world?
We have been brining purpose-driven entrepreneurs together for years now to help the reconnect with their purpose on a personal level. However, we are now expanding to a different piece of work by running the SDG's programmes, which are summits that are focused on the Global Goals for Sustainability and bring together the members of the ecosystems and industries to collaborate on changing the world's biggest problems.
SD | What benefits have you seen since certification?
It's easier for us to explain the work we do. Also the people we employ understand in a more meaningful and practical way how are culture impacts them.
SD | How did your other staff react to the certification?
We are a small team but they were all on board. They also find it really exciting to share the news with their friends and families.
SD | What has changed in your organisation as a result of taking the B Impact Assessment?
We have been more conscious about the practical aspects of how we can run our business as a force for good. We know what policies to implement and we are constantly looking at the business to evaluate how we are doing everything.
SD | What does the year ahead hold in store for your company?
We will be working on the SDG programmes I mentioned above and we would love for the B Corps to attend and to show the rest of the world how you can use business as a force for good and have an impact.
SD | Who is your B Corp crush?
Everyone please :)
SD | It’s 2020, 5 years since you certified as a B Corp, what does the movement look like?
The ball shows a world where everyone knows about the movement and wants to be part of it. A world where people don't automatically think that businesses are evil, where people are paid well for doing good and where they don't have to compromise. This is the impact of the movement.
SD | What is inspiring you at the moment?
The school of life, the entrepreneurs we meet, and a personal one, the book I am currently reading: Atlas Shrugged.
