Better Know a B: Radfield Home Care
Radfield Home Care is an award-winning company built on an outstanding reputation that provides care services to clients who wish to remain living in their own home. Founder Dr. Hannah MacKechnie shared their B Corp story with us.
SD | Tell us a bit about the history of your company?
Radfield started life as a small highly regarded Residential Care Home for elderly people in Shrewsbury, England. Myself and my brother Alex grew up in the residential home that our parents established, living alongside the elderly residents.
In 2008 we both decided to join the family company after I had pursued a successful career in medicine, qualifying and working as a GP, and Alex followed a career in both the charitable sector and the financial sector.
We established Radfield Home Care to meet the care needs of people wishing to remain in their own homes instead of moving into a residential setting. Since 2008 we grew the company, offering our care services across the West Midlands and more recently we launched the franchising arm of our business and we are now supporting other caring entrepreneurs to own their own successful Radfield Home Care branch in their local community across the UK.
SD | Why did you become a B Corp?
I first became aware of the B Corp movement through other companies in different countries that I have links to spreading the word. It immediately resonated with us as it reflects the company values that we have and our desire to expand on this with the support of a larger similarly minded community.
SD | What excites you about being part of the global B Corporation movement?
Having heard about the B Corp movement from other countries initially anyway B Corp has always felt to us like a global movement.
Our day to day business operation is very locally focused as we employ local people and deliver our care services into our local communities. We therefore embrace the opportunity to lift up our heads and take a far larger viewpoint about our position in the world which we are helped to do through the B Corp movement.
SD | Can you tell us about the impact that your company is having in the world?
Our company is delivering the highest quality of care to people when and where they need it. It is a vital service that people rely heavily on to keep them living independently and safely at home. Our business has a strong impact into our local communities, and with strong, supportive local communities, the world is a better place.
SD | What benefits have you seen since certification?
Since being certified we have promoted our B Corp certification at franchise exhibitions where we talk to people about the Radfield Home Care franchise opportunity. This seems to be a real conversation starter and people are really interested in what the movement represents and feel that it adds an element of trust to our Radfield brand.
SD | How did your other staff react to the certification?
We have noticed a real buzz amongst our employees about being part of a big movement, and as we were the very first health care company in the UK to become a B Corp this created a real sense of ownership and pride - which is absolutely priceless!
SD | What has changed in your organisation as a result of taking the B Impact Assessment?
We are now being more pro-active than ever about monitoring our environmental impact and actively seeking ways to minimise or offset this. This includes becoming increasingly paper lite in all of our offices and we have introduced more software solutions to enable us to achieve this. We are also consciously sourcing more of our supplies from local companies to ensure that we are meeting the B Corp objectives.
SD | What does the year ahead hold in store for your company?
We are currently bringing on our early waves of franchisees and supporting them to get their businesses up and running. We are looking forward to helping them to grow and develop successful businesses and to bring on more franchisees across the UK and create a thriving Radfield Home Care network.
SD | Who is your B Corp crush?
As the first B Corp in the UK healthcare sector we are looking forward to being at the forefront of this sector embracing the B Corp movement and working with other like minded companies both in the UK and beyond. It would be great to connect with other home care companies outside of the UK and share ideas and best practise with them.
SD | It’s 2020, 5 years since you certified as a B Corp, what does the movement look like?
We believe the future looks really bright for the B Corp movement - the values it promotes really resonate with people and in particular the younger generation.
We believe that the tipping point of the B Corp movement will be reached by 2020 in the UK and when this happens B Corp will be in the national consciousness. We would love to see the point where people are actively seeking out a businesses B Corp status and actively choosing to engage with them on this basis.
SD | What is inspiring you at the moment?
I love reading when I get the chance - right now I'm reading Pompeii by Robert Harris and I recently read Predatory Thinking by Dave Trott which was a great light-hearted look at the world of advertising.
