Better Know a B: Macphie
Macphie is a leading, independent, added-value food ingredients manufacturer, who have been producing premium quality food ingredients and solutions for over 85 years.
SD | Tell us a bit about the history of your company?
Macphie was established in 1928 as a bakery wholesale business in Glasgow with a staff of six people. We moved into bakery and food ingredients manufacturing in 1954 before relocating to the Glenbervie Estate in 1973, which has been in the Macphie family since the 1200s.
The company has grown into the UK’s leading, independent, added-value food ingredients manufacturer, and the Macphie product range is used by bakers, chefs and food manufacturers across almost every industry worldwide. We’re passionate about corporate social responsibility and sustainability, driving a number of initiatives to help the environment and local communities.
Our innovative product range offers unrivalled choice, covering ambient sweet and savoury bakery mixes and concentrates, icings and fillings, glazes, sweet and savoury sauces, desserts, fruit coulis, dairy cream alternatives, release agents, melts and flavoured butters.
We operate two manufacturing sites - the Glenbervie site and Tannochside near Glasgow - both with BRC Grade AA certification – the highest grading for food safety and quality.
SD | Why did you become a B Corp?
B Corp mirrors many of our philosophies and long-standing policies at Macphie and it seemed like a movement close to or hearts. It also meant we could benefit from best practice and gain from interaction with other members.
SD | What excites you about being part of the global B Corporation movement?
Macphie trading on a global scale shares the same ethos as many of the B Corp companies. Being part of ‘one big team’ pushing for the same goals gives everyone at Macphie a great sense of pride.
SD | Can you tell us about the impact that your company is having in the world?
Macphie is extremely passionate about the environment and the local community in which we belong. We were the first manufacturer to process food ingredients using green energy created by locally sourced wood chips. In 2014 we erected two wind turbines to provide energy for the main manufacturing site at Glenbervie. These two projects alone reduce our CO2 emissions by over 10,000 tonnes per year. We also treat all effluent onsite and plant 30,000 trees every year.
These are great achievements, but nothing gives us more pleasure than helping the local community. Whether it’s helping build flood defences, supplying defibrillators in remote areas, sponsoring the local football team or supplying bursaries for the children and grandchildren of employees, these are also important to our company values and help bring the local community together.
SD | What benefits have you seen since certification?
In general terms, seeing B Corp growing elsewhere around the world, especially in the UK, has given the movement a more global feel and is less US-centric.
SD | How did your other staff react to the certification?
We were one of the first companies in the UK to gain B Corp accreditation so it was met with a great sense of pride from employees. The accreditation underpinned many of our values we already had in place at Macphie.
SD | What has changed in your organisation as a result of taking the B Impact Assessment?
We’ve started to measure more areas from a CSR perspective than we’ve done previously, enabling us to review our focus on B Corp accreditation and learn from best practice in various areas.
SD | What does the year ahead hold in store for your company?
It looks like another very positive outlook for the year ahead. The company is growing in many areas, we’ve increased capital investment and various new products have been introduced to market. We’ll continue to invest in our people through development and training programmes and invest in projects that align with our company values.
SD | It’s 2020, 5 years since you certified as a B Corp, what does the movement look like?
A significantly bigger global movement with both large public companies and smaller businesses interacting for the benefit of themselves, employees, customers, communities and the environment in which they impact.
SD | What is inspiring you at the moment?
The passion our employees bring to their jobs every day. They’re a credit to the organisation and are helping to cement a legacy that future generations of Macphie employees can also be part of.
